Matej Zemljič at VSGT Maribor: “The host is an actor – every guest is a new story!”

At the Higher Vocational College for Hospitality and Tourism Maribor (VSGT), an inspiring event titled ODštekani mladi vs. IZštekan biznis took place as part of Mentor Day, highlighting the importance of mentorship, youth motivation, and intergenerational collaboration in hospitality professions. The event brought together representatives from educational institutions, the industry, mentors, and students in an open dialogue about the future of work, education, and cooperation.
The professional seminar was hosted by the popular television presenter Bernarda Žarn, who—with her warmth and professionalism—created a relaxed atmosphere for the exchange of ideas. The keynote speaker was the acclaimed theatre and film actor Matej Zemljič, whose charismatic performance captivated the audience. In his lecture, he emphasized the parallels between acting and hospitality professions—both require authenticity, improvisation, empathy, and the ability to respond to unexpected situations. Zemljič also shared personal experiences about stage fright, the importance of liveliness in performance, and the “sense of lightness” in life.
The central part of the event was the roundtable discussion titled “Do You Really Think You Have to Do Everything Alone?”, which addressed key questions about the role of mentors, the importance of personal branding, youth motivation, and the advantages of intergenerational cooperation. The panel featured distinguished experts:
Dr. Matej Tušak, psychologist, educator, sports advisor, and Olympic mentor
Mira Šemić, founder and director of Gault & Millau Slovenia
Dagmar Pečovnik, the first female concierge in Slovenia and Head of Hotel Development at Eurotas Hotels
Filip Rossi, Director of Hospitality and Marketing at Vina Rossi
Matej Zemljič, theatre and film actor
They agreed that today’s young generation seeks freedom and flexibility but simultaneously needs a clear sense of purpose, belonging, and the support of experienced mentors.
The event was also an opportunity for a ceremonial awards presentation. VSGT Maribor received five awards from the Community of Higher Vocational Colleges of Slovenia for its high‑quality and successful work in the past year. Special recognition was given to Jana Geiser from Hotel City Maribor as Best Mentor in Industry, whose dedication and professionalism significantly contribute to the development of young professionals. The award for Best Mentor at Restaurant Sedem, selected by students, went to Tine Leopold, a VSGT alumnus and an important member of the Restaurant Sedem team.
Guests were treated to a culinary experience prepared by the students of Restaurant Sedem, who crafted refined dishes under the careful guidance of their mentors. Restaurant Sedem is the only school restaurant in Slovenia included in the prestigious Michelin Guide for six consecutive years—a testament to the exceptional quality of work, mentorship, and creativity of young culinary talents.
The event left a strong impression and confirmed that the future of hospitality lies in collaboration, open dialogue, and mutual respect. Mentors are not just guides—they are co‑creators of stories that help young people find direction, purpose, and confidence in an ever‑changing world.
Participant Testimonials:
“The roundtable opened topics we rarely discuss—about how important it is that young people know they are not alone.” – Mentor from a partner company
“I am proud to be part of a school that not only educates but also connects people with vision.” – VSGT alumna
The event proved once again that VSGT Maribor is a place where stories are written that have the power to shape the future.
